Statistics. 4/2/2007

Regardless of where you stand on the issue of the U.S. involvement in Iraq, here’s a sobering statistic. There has been a monthly average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theatre of operations during the last 22 months, and a total of 2,867 deaths. That gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers. The firearm death rate in Washington D.C. is 80.6 per 100,000 persons for the same period.

That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in the U.S. Capital than you are in Iraq.

Conclusion: The U.S. should pull out of Washington.

Lol. Though that may be true, I think the main reason to pull out is due to cost, not lives.

camlok : War is never cheap. Especially in the cost of human lives. Your point is valid.

why don’t they just move the capital to Baghdad?

I only got a tiny chuckle out of this one. To those familiar with statistics, you and me know stats are a big pile of cow doo-doo.

Just a quick observation (and a reminder to gullible readers) that the more accurate figures to look up are

1) of the “160,000 troops”, how many are actually in combat duty in dangerous zones, versus those desk-bound or in (very safe) support roles?

2) How many of the 80.6 firearms death rate in Washington are actually in urban/slum areas?

I have no fear of walking around Washington DC and eating a hot dog without a bulletproof vest (now that the sniper was caught..). But I do not want to be walking in Iraq’s danger zones. Not even in a battle tank escorted by a company of hard-core Marines with various acronym-ed lethal items and “I love Pain” tattoed on their forearms, haha

I’ll take the firearm stats in Washington, over the car bomb and suicide bomber attack stats in Iraq any day.

I think the people in Washington DC need to improve their aim. Not one of them has hit Bush yet.

KY : They would, if K-Mart opened up a branch there.

Tanton : I do agree, numbers can be made to say anything. And they most certainly can lie. This was taught to me by my Stats and Math lecturers. Which is why this post comes under the “Roy’s Jokes” category.

Grant : Iraq was a nice place. Note the “was”.

Dabido : That’s because the Secret Service are really good, and on the ball. Irregardless of how they might feel about Bush personally.

Yes, I can buy that one.

I think there ought to be some judicious use of large-yield weapons to make sure that there are no vermin left hanging around in the hallways too.

Whether through fear, greed, or simple incompetence, the cretins of either party are selling the American public up the river as fast as they can.

That said, hopefully now that the DC Handgun Ban has been struck down, more of them will be the bad guys instead of innocents getting hurt. They day that DC finally enacts a concealed carry permit law for average citizens, I’ll buy the first round.
