An apology. 6/26/2007

I guess I owe you some sort of apology.

I mean, the gap that you left between your car and the car in front was well over 30 meters.  I signalled my intention to lane change, and did so in the proper manner.

I guess I must have upset you some, because you were speeding up to try and close the gap, and then flashed your high beams to show me that you were somewhat annoyed.

I think there was really no need for you to start flashing your high beams contimously at me while I was keeping pace with the traffic in front.  It isn’t really my fault you were dreaming and didn’t stay with the pace of traffic.

I definitely know that there wasn’t a call for you to start tailgating me, and showing me the right side of your car, like you were in this really fast car trying to get past on the highway.  We were in the middle of the city, and it was rush hour.  There really isn’t any place to go fast at that time of day.

I know you think that little local made piece of shit car you’re driving is shit hot.  It’s probably your pride and joy, even though you are in hock to the finance company for the next 9 years, and paying for that car probably takes a hefty chunk out of your salary.

I know you think you’re a really hot driver as well, but you obviously didn’t think about what it was your were very dangerously tail gating in rush hour traffic, and the kind of engine it has, and what it weighs.

I know you didn’t think that the driver behind the wheel of the big diesel, i.e. me, had any kind of driving skills to speak of, or that I would be easily intimidated.  I guess after you’ve shared a race track in competition with 2 men who went on to become World Champions, nothing intimidates you anymore on the road.

I think you really don’t have any knowledge of the characteristics of vehicles, and how to use their engines effectively, or that diesels have enormous amounts of engine braking available on the downshift.

I guess you also didn’t notice the tow ball at the back of the vehicle you were following so very closely, trying to intimidate the driver.

I think you might have pissed your pants when the big truck in front of you went from 90 km/h to walking pace in the space of a heart beat, without the brake lights flashing.  I did see you trying to swerve, and you realising you had no where else to go in the heavy traffic.

I guess the crumple zone at the front of your car did its job, and I guess the mess from the top of your radiator being torn off by the tow ball will eventually evaporate from the road.

I don’t really care that your car is probably damaged enough that it will have to be in the workshop for the next 6 weeks while your insurance company goes through the motions.  A few more scratches on the truck’s rear bumper is really neither here nor there for me.  All I have to do is throw the keys to the Admin executive in the company and say to him, “get it fixed.”

Actually, come to think of it, I’m not sorry at all.

6. Dangerous Variable - 6/27/2007

Cool… you’re my hero! The champion of the day!!!

7. bikerwannabe - 6/27/2007

Farkin deja vu…. this morning, some turd in a local milo tin can was tailgating me along the NSHW. Same scenario… he left a gap, I pulled in, traffic was heavy.. yada yada yada…

To bad i don\’t have a tow ball, but once traffic cleared, the straight six pulled away easily….

Stupid farkin loser….

another one down… and another one down… another one bites the dust.

9. NSDS3HvLDjJd - 6/27/2007

What a coincidence. Someone bumped into me at a traffic light yesterday.

10. HORNY ANG MOH - 6/27/2007

Sometime I think u r bad (from what u have write), but then if I am in ur shoe I will be doing the same thing ( that is why when I drive a milo tin car I drive like an Ah Pek ). BTW what ‘truck’ u drive, still curious. It will be nice if u took some pic of this ‘encounter’. Have a nice day.

I sort of like braking without flashing the brake lights as well.

Well, auto boxes, damn. Have to pulse the throttle to keep the car from jerking.

12. ShaolinTiger - 6/27/2007

Heh these idiots don’t know that the engine can be used for anything but accelerating.

They also have disk brake the size of 50sen coins, they really don’t have the skills nor the equipment to drive like they do.

I like to run them off the road sometimes too if I’m in a bad mood.

13. Nicholas - 6/28/2007

Funny enough.. i learned to use the engine to slow myself while riding bike… :P

14. thesnark - 6/28/2007

Nicholas : That is the one thing you shouldn’t do. Motorcycle engines are not designed for engine braking, and you will prematurely stress the engine.

15. Nicholas - 6/28/2007

O.o I’ll remember that…

16. oyster - 6/28/2007

I guess some things are universal.. that scenario is played out every day all around the world…. i guess they see it as an insult to their manhood (though increasingly I see similar behaviour by young women driving cars that daddy brought them) if someone happens to pass them… I guess the second or so they ‘lost’ in traffic is so precious that they need to regain it….

ps gotta love compression braking on a diesel…

17. oyster - 6/28/2007

pps. would it be mean of me to hope he doesnt have insurance???

18. irondad - 6/28/2007

Damn, the Insane Trainer is coming out again. Guess I’ll let him out a minute. A lot of motorcycle riders use engine braking in traffic, designed for it or not. They never show brake lights. All the drivers behind know is that suddenly that bike is a whole closer!

Whether you’re using the brakes or not, flash the light!! Communicate to the brain dead masses as best as possible. I suggest pressing the rear brake pedal as it has less effect on the suspension than the front brake. Being rear ended on a bike won’t have us writing the same kind of letter Snark did here, I promise.

(though increasingly I see similar behaviour by young women driving cars that daddy brought them) if someone happens to pass them… I guess the second or so they ‘lost’ in traffic is so precious that they need to regain it….

hmmm. What would make you think a young woman could only have a car her daddy bought her? So if a young man is driving an equivalent car, would you have thought his dad bought if for him too? Or that he worked hard and earned it through the sweat of his brow / plundering of his brain?

Sometimes it’s the fucking principle of the thing. Like the BMW with the smoky mirrors who tried to illegally merge into a single exit lane where there was a queue (but not significant traffic), who I wouldn’t let into the queue, who horned me and who I then gave the finger. He then aggressively pursued my car and basically swerved into the 1 inch space between me and the car in front of me 500m down the road.

So am I the asshole (in a volvo bought by my dad 15 years ago) or is he the asshole ? (bald malay dude who probably bought the beamer using under the table money or money earned simply because of his skin colour).

Yes, i know the answer to the question is we’re all assholes.

20. oyster - 6/28/2007

nope.. its not what I’m implying… the assumption at least in this country is.. any really young person in a late model car is either driving the family car (if it is a very expensive model), or driving a car parents have brought them (unless they have been dealing drugs or indulging in some other illicit activity). The average teenager regardless of gender isnt able to fork out $30-50k plus for transport however there are a lot driving cars worth that much or more…

We all know most young blokes tend to drive beyond their abilities however a growing trend here (not sure why) is for young women becoming more aggressive behind the wheel… its frightening to see what some do in traffic…

21. Lisa - 6/28/2007

Bravo, Snark!! Sometimes, when I encounter idiots like that, I wish I had your diesel too. I mean, how much faster can one go in rush hour traffic and I think I drive along almost the same route as you in mid-town.

22. Tan Yee Wei - 6/29/2007

Hmm, manual transmission diesel eh? Must try one of those things one day…

23. RVL - 6/30/2007

How can u be so inconsiderate?! slowing down to walking pace in traffic. You could have caused more damage to other innocent road users like the car behind the asshole or a bike moving in the between lanes.. i hope you’ve taken all that into consideration before u decided to do this…

wait.. what i’m i saying?!

i love u.. thanks
